Scripture

6I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.

Observation

Jesus is greater than the temple. People can mistake a holy edifice for the Holy Presence of God. God’s presence is not confined to sanctuaries we consecrate for worship.

Application

Having done many field services as a committed layperson, a youth director and a military chaplain, I can attest to the power and presence of God in the beauty of natural surroundings. When we acknowledge and invoke God’s presence, it does not call God out of hiding. Instead, God especially reveals the Spirit to us, just as God as already revealed naturally the glory of his handiwork throughout creation.

Prayer

Father God, we forgive my idolatry. I have often mistake holy objects and buildings for your presence. They are merely sign posts that point me to your presence. I ask for you to live in my heart through your Spirit as you reign in heaven with the Son at your right hand. In the name of your Beloved Son. Amen.
