Scripture

When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.’ v. 2:19 (NRSV)

Observation

King Herod died. Even if those living in a kingdom proclaim “Long live the King!”, no earthly king will reign forever. Jesus does reign forever. And just as the return to Israel when he was a toddler, Jesus will return to the place where people seek God at a time when only God knows (see Matt. 24:26-41). The first time Jesus came to the land and people of Israel. The second time Jesus will come for the whole world because the Gentiles have been grafted into the tree of Israel (see Romans 11:11-31).

Application

When I get distressed about the rulers of this world, I need to remember that they are temporary and their power is limited. God reigns forever through Jesus Christ and Christ’s power is supreme and unlimited in all the universe.

Prayer

Almighty God, King of the Universe, we acknowledge your greatness and authority. Help me not to fret or invest too much energy worrying about the political leadership of the world that comes and goes. Help me to live confidently in your kingdom within my heart, soul, and mind. In Your holy and matchless Name I pray. Amen.
