Scripture:
9 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,” they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
Observation:
The Twelve symbolize God’s people (as in the Twelve Tribes and the Twelve Disciples). The number seven symbolize the days of the week. Give us today our daily bread. There is always enough for God’s people, and God will feed his people through Jesus Christ.
Application:
I believe this verse calls me to depend more on God’s provision and plan. I also feel encouraged to try to see the deeper symbolism in the sayings of Jesus. There is more than meets the eye.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, teach me to trust in your provision and your teaching. Feed us the Bread of Life that sustains and gives us purpose. Always feed us this bread. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
