TUESDAY TIDINGS for August 27, 2024

TUESDAY TIDINGS

Pastor’s Corner

Dear First United Methodist Church of Mt. Dora,

Many thanks for your support of my ministry and the missions and ministries of First UMC of Mt. Dora during my deployment.

I have been welcomed warmly by Rev. Dr. Jon A. Herrin, Senior Pastor, and the flock of First UMC of McAllen, TX.

Even though I travel hundreds of miles during the week along the border from Laredo to Brownsville, the command team I serve gives the Unit Ministry Team a Sunday sabbath.

In the last two weeks at First UMC of McAllen, TX, I have had the opportunity to attend the Friendship Sunday School Class. They were studying the “Six Decisions That Will Change Your Life”, a study written by our Florida Conference Bishop Tom Berlin when he was a pastor in Virginia.

Two weeks ago, they discussed the story of the Gaughan family becoming guardians for a 14-year-old young man from Eritrea, Africa at the encouragement of their teenage son, challenging them to respond fully to the divine call. They made a decision to follow a divine call to respond.

The class is led by Certified Lay Minister, David Clark, who frequently likes to use studies by Tom Berlin. This reminded me of our own Rosemary Plummer, also a Certified Lay Minister, who leads the Upper Room Sunday School class and serves as our Minister of Visitation.

It is wonderful to see the United Methodist Connection at work through the power of the Holy Spirit.

In closing, it turns out that I am not the first Army chaplain to serve Mt. Dora. Rev. Bob Blackburn served First – Mt. Dora, Trinity – DeLand, and First – Orlando in the 1950s and 1960s among other appointments. He was an Army chaplain from 1944 to 1946.

I learned some of this from Rev. Judi New in our wonderful archives in addition to members at First – Orlando and Rev. Jim Harnish. They have a display on chaplains of WWII at the archives on the campus of Florida Southern College.

I pray that all is well for you in Florida, and I look forward to returning to my primary appointment with you in Mt. Dora. I am very grateful for your support and the ministry of our interim pastor, Rev. Dr. Donna Manwaring in my absence. Most of all, I am grateful to “God above from whom all blessings flow.”

Grace and Peace,

Pastor David
