22But Jesus answered, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?’ They said to him, ‘We are able.’
Observation
James and John’s mother asks for a special favor for her sons. The brothers also ask Jesus for the same. They want the benefits of following Jesus without counting the cost.
Application
When we begin to follow Jesus with enthusiasm, we often don’t count the cost of what following would mean. Jesus is asking us to realize that there is no such thing as an easy way to follow God’s leading.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, help me to realize that grace does not come cheap, but that you gave your life as an atonement for our sins. We were in deep debt, and you bailed us out. Thank you for your extravagant and costly grace. In Your Holy Name I pray. Amen.
