TUESDAY TIDINGS

Pastor’s Corner

Dear First United Methodist Church,

As we approach Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, a day dedicated to honoring the incredible women in our lives, we are reminded of the deep roots of this special occasion. One such influential figure in the history of Mother’s Day as we know it today is Anna Jarvis, a faithful Methodist who dedicated her life to honoring mothers and advocating for the recognition of their selfless love.

Anna Jarvis, inspired by her own mother’s devotion and care, tirelessly campaigned for the establishment of a day to honor mothers. Her passion and determination led to the official declaration of Mother’s Day in the United States in 1914. Jarvis’ deep faith and unwavering commitment to celebrating motherhood serve as a powerful example for us all.

As we reflect on the legacy of Anna Jarvis and the countless mothers who have shaped our lives, let us turn to the Scriptures for guidance and wisdom. Proverbs 31:25-30 reminds us of the strength, dignity, and wisdom of a woman who fears the Lord, stating, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

In Ephesians 6:2, we are encouraged to “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise. Let us heed these words and show gratitude and respect to the mothers in our midst, recognizing the profound impact they have on our lives and our faith journeys.

This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate the remarkable women who embody love, sacrifice, and grace. May we honor their dedication, their wisdom, and their unwavering love with hearts full of gratitude and appreciation. Whether they are with us in person or in spirit, let us cherish and uplift them as they have cherished and uplifted us.

As we gather to celebrate Mother’s Day, let us remember the words of Psalm 127:3, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” May we give thanks for the gift of motherhood and the blessing of the mothers who have shaped our lives with their love and faith.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor David

Tuesday Tidings Fun
“My mom was the cookie-baking, school volunteering, neighborhood monitor mom.  When we grew up, she began nurturing Habitat for Humanity families.  Her loving commitment to others continued until her ascent to heaven.”

~Janet Westlake
“When I was a child, about 3 to 6 years old, we lived on a hill in Maryland. The road to our house was on a steep road with a median.  When it snowed yearly, my mom would sleigh ride down the hill with me!  Then she would let me ride on the sleigh while she pulled it back to the top of the hill.  She would do this over and over with me.
She also made the best applesauce cake; however, I didn’t like raisins in the cake.  She would bake the applesauce cake with about 1/8 of it without raisins!  How did she do that?
My mom also made all my clothes until I was about 16, and they were beautiful!  I never had the same dress as anyone else.”
